International Civil Rights Center and Museum, Greensboro, Guilford County

When Ezell Blair, Jr., David Richmond, Joseph McNeil, and Franklin McCain sat down at the whites-only counter at F.W. Woolworth store on South Elm Street, service did not come easily. This simple act of peaceful civil disobedience and the amount of publicity it got was amazing. Now, a museum is being constructed in memory of those people. Housed in the original store, the exhibits include the whites-only counter where Ezell Blair asked for a cup of coffee, a re-creation of Greensboro’s 1960s railway station with its “Colored Only” area as well as white-only restrooms and water fountains.
